Eleven players stepped into the irons to kick off the USPA Middle School League at Bloomfield Polo Club in Saratoga Springs, New York, this past weekend. Bloomfield Purple’s Maegan Byrne struck first for her team in the round robin. Bloomfield Yellow kicked into gear, with a goal from Adam Yachkouri and three tallies from teammate Jack Whitman, including one from the penalty line to end the chukker 4-1. Bloomfield Purple’s Chris Veitch opened second chukker scoring with a penalty conversion of his own, then traded field goals with Bloomfield Yellow’s Whitman and Yachkouri to end the first game of the tournament 6-4 in favor of Bloomfield Yellow.
Bloomfield Yellow faced Bloomfield Blue in the second game of the tournament with Whitman quick to open the scoring. Bloomfield Blue’s Connelly Cashen evened the score, but Whitman found his mark again to keep Bloomfield Yellow’s lead. Bloomfield Blue’s Carolina Lott-Diamond tied the game before the horn sounded ending the first chukker 2-all. Daisy Scherer and Whitman combined for three goals to give their team the lead again, but Bloomfield Blue was not about to give up. An assist from Skyler Knott led to a Cashen goal while another from teammate Mary Duncan pulled Bloomfield Blue within one goal 5-4. Scherer’s hot stick sunk a final goal for Bloomfield Yellow to secure their win 6-4.
Bloomfield Blue and Bloomfield Purple met for the final two chukkers of the weekend. Cashen scored the only goal for Bloomfield Blue in the first chukker and with the help of teammates Lott-Diamond and Duncan, kept Bloomfield Purple off the scoreboard. The second chukker proved to be in favor of Bloomfield Purple, with Byrne and Veitch combining for seven goals to Duncan’s single penalty conversion. With the help of teammate Amelia Safran’s defensive skills, Bloomfield Blue took the final game, 7-2.
Connelly Cashen, Mary Duncan, Chris Veitch and Jack Whitman were elected to the tournament All-Star team, and Jack Whitman was selected for the Sportsmanship Award. Bobaletta, played by Meagan Byrne was chosen as the tournament’s Best Playing Pony.
USPA Middle School League continues this weekend at Powers Polo School in East Palestine, Pennsylvania.

The suspension of USPA Tournaments and Events will be lifted for USPA Member Clubs in locales where hosting polo matches and tournaments is permitted under applicable state and local laws, executive orders and similar decrees. The USPA Member Clubs in these locales are encouraged to follow all such requirements of their state and local authorities with respect to polo operations. In addition, we also encourage all USPA Member Clubs to take the precautions recommended by the CDC. We are preparing a detailed list of best practices for USPA Member Clubs as they return to hosting USPA Tournaments and Events and plan to circulate these guidelines within the next week. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely and will notify you if we determine a different course of action is necessary.
