Tim Dutta has become one of the most influential people in American polo. He has played several tournaments alongside his son, Timmy Dutta, while representing his business, Dutta Corp, an international and domestic horse shipping company. As the creator and founder of Dutta Corp, Tim speaks boldly about his passion for horses and their well-being. "We are a crazy horse family. Horses are our life and way of living."
Having grown up in New Delhi, India, Tim remembers his polo beginnings. "Once I was exposed to polo, I fell in love with the sport and played it until I left India to visit the United States. I had a 25-year break until my dear friend, the late Carlos Gracida, got me into stick and ball, and the rest is history," Tim told CLICKPOLOUSA.
Dutta, the player and the team, has lifted many trophies. "In 2019, Dutta Corp won the triple at International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, Florida: Herbie Pennell Cup, Joe Barry Memorial and Ylvisaker Cup."
Polo is an essential part of Tim's daily routine: "I share the passion with my son Timmy. Riding or playing with him is an amazing feeling. We spend lots of time together in the stables or on the field. In addition, my global company involves the international transport of horses, so we ship polo horses around the world."
What is your perspective of polo in the United States today?
"The last two years of polo in Wellington, Florida, have been the best yet. We had a large number of teams playing in the GAUNTLET OF POLO® and a similar number in the 20-goal. The World Polo League (WPL) had 10-12 teams and most of the high-goal players played here. Polo is in a great place, and we definitely see the sport growing. In addition, we also had healthy medium and low-goal seasons, which are crucial for the growth of the sport."
What is your opinion of COVID-19?
"Although there is uncertainty, we know that COVID-19 will leave a mark on humanity, as it has affected all of our lives. I pray it leaves us sooner than later and that all our friends are healthy and safe. Once this passes, I hope we are able to regroup and continue to enjoy polo. The most important things are health and safety for all."
Every father wishes for his child to be successful in all that they do, and Tim Dutta is no different. "My son is a talented player with all the qualities of a top high-goal player. Anyone who has seen him play, either in the United States or Argentina, knows this. He rides extremely well, hits the ball hard and with perfect direction; he is very tough, as he attacks and defends, reads and makes plays while remaining confident in tough situations. He wants it more than anyone I know." Having been trained and taught by some of the world’s greatest polo masters, like Piki Diaz Alberdi and Memo Gracida, Timmy is strapped for success. Undoubtedly, Timmy gets his motivation and positive energy from his father, who has set the example for his son.
