The first weekend of the Farmers & Merchants Bank America Cup 16-goal tournament kicked off with three tight matches on Sunday, July 28. All three competitive games were won within one goal, proving how evenly-matched the teams are competing this season.
The first game was played between Klentner Ranch and Bensoleimani.com. Klentner Ranch had a strong offensive start, scoring five goals in the first two chukkers, leaving Bensoleimani.com with only one on the board. Bensoleimani.com regrouped leaving Klentner Ranch scoreless in the third and fourth chukkers and tying the score in the fifth. Ultimately, Jesse Bray converted a Penalty 2 for Klentner Ranch to outscore Soleimani’s team by one goal in the sixth 8-7.
The second game was a match up between Sol de Agosto and Lucchese, Lucchese with the advantage having won their first game of tournament play. Sol de Agosto began the game with impressive field goals, but Lucchese kept the score close with their accuracy from the penalty line. After half time, Lucchese came back strong and decreased the gap to 7-4. Sol de Agosto kept their composure with Paco de Narvaez nailing five penalty conversions in the fifth and sixth chukkers. Nonetheless, Lucchese kept their team together, coming out on top with a final score 11-10.
The final match of the day included Santa Clara and champions of the 2019 Robert Skene Trophy, FMB Too! Santa Clara was awarded one goal on handicap, however this did not deter FMB Too! as they evened the score to tie in the second chukker. In the third chukker, Santi Wulff and Pipe Marquez took action on the field, bringing FMB Too! into the lead with a score of 6-3 before halftime. Luis Escobar and Wulff exchanged goals in the fourth to maintain the gap. However, the game turned around in the sixth with Santa Clara playing hard with four goals scored between Nico Escobar and Mariano Obregon. Both teams playing an excellent last chukker, the game finished with a close score of 8-9 in favor of FMB Too!
