This Saturday, June 25, will see Newport (Portsmouth, Rhode Island) take on Boston, Newport's oldest rival, in the continuation of the Newport International Polo Series, presented by Turkish Airlines. Two of the oldest polo clubs in America have a long-fought rivalry, which can be traced back to early colonial times when religious dissidents splintered off from Puritan Boston, by choice or by excommunication, to seek greater freedom in new settlements to the south.
Saturday will also pit teams in contention for prize money in the Northeastern Circuit Congressional Cup. The day will host a double-header in the USPA tournament, first with Newport taking on Pony Up/Kingswood, then later with Glen Farm meeting Acoaxet. Visit www.nptpolo.com for full details on the Newport vs. Boston match and the Northeastern Circuit Congressional Cup as well as advanced ticket sales for the match.
"It is exciting to bring out the best competitors in the Northeast hub of polo in one concentrated tournament right out of the gate, to set the tone for a competitive year in the Northeast this season," commented Leighton S. Jordan, USPA Northeastern Circuit Governor.
During this week's match, the weekly Door Prize Drawing will award a special gift from Veuve Clicquot to one lucky winner, and a chance at the Turkish Airlines Grand Prize, which includes two business class round trip tickets to anywhere in the world on Turkish Airlines. Another gem of each match includes the Stella Artois Best in Show Contest, awarding prizes for creativity in embracing the theme of the day. The theme for the Newport vs. Boston match will be “Tea Party.” The decorative picnic tradition has earned Newport Polo the title of Best Tailgating in New England from Yankee Magazine.
A bubbling cart delivering chilled Veuve Clicquot Champagne will circle the stands throughout the day, to the delight of spectators seated on the manicured lawn around BD Field, while the Patio Bar will pour cocktails, wines, draft and craft beverages during the match with Stella Artois on tap, Santa Margherita Wines and Veuve Clicquot Champagne. Fieldside amenities will include Gourmet Food Trucks with options from Newport Chowder Co, Wally's Hot Dog Cart, Village Greek, Hawaiian Jim's Shave Ice and Milk Caffe. The Pro Shop will be bustling before and during game time with fans collecting the new limited-edition items and annual best sellers that arrive weekly.
The matches will conclude with a victory lap around the field in the Newport Polo Fan Salute, followed by the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Toast and Trophy Presentation of player prizes from Providence Diamond. Autograph signing and the after-polo cocktail hour will finish off the evening.
Following the polo, the Modern Luxury Lounge will welcome players and supporters with a complimentary player toast, cohosted by The Cocktail Guru and Goslings. The player toast will feature the specialty cocktail of the day, often Goslings Dark 'n Stormy, the official drink of the Newport International Polo Series.
