The Detroit Polo Club is the premier polo facility located in Hartland, Michigan. From club matches and sanctioned tournaments, to corporate and charity events or just tailgating field side, there is something for everyone. Detroit Polo Club accommodates all level of players and offers a diverse selection of programs including coaching chukkers, practice league, and club level tournaments.
In 2005 the Detroit Polo School was established, which offers a Beginner Polo Program dedicated to teaching the game of polo. Professional instructor Paul Wheaton and Certified Polo Instructor, Emmalyn Wheaton, along with a string of seasoned polo school horses, teach beginners strategy, playing skills and the rules of the game. A combination of lessons, practice games and clinics allow students an opportunity to learn in a fun and safe environment.
Emmalyn earned her USPA Polo Instructor Certification in 2015. She initially got her start in polo in college at Michigan State University when a friend invited her to try out for the team. She and her husband have been teaching for 10 years and coach the University of Michigan polo team. Additionally, Emmalyn coaches the Detroit Interscholastic team and has managed NYTS tournaments hosted at the Detroit Polo Club.
When asked about one of her favorite teaching memories Emmalyn said, “Seeing members of the Michigan State University that I taught come back to play polo at the Detroit Polo Club! It is so rewarding to see the “Polo Circle of Life” fulfilled!” In this same vein, The Detroit Polo Club offers a unique “Work to Ride” program for college students and local kids that stay in the area during the summer. Trading labor for chukkers and stick & ball sessions, students groom and help with an assortment of club managing tasks in return for more polo experience. Similarly, Detroit Polo Club will be taking advantage of the Polo Development Intern Program this summer with a student intern from Oklahoma State University.
The facilities at Detroit Polo Club are among the best in Michigan and the perfect location to host a charity or corporate event, wedding or private party. The club features 2 regulation sized fields, a fully enclosed hitting cage, and field side parking. Sunday Polo matches begin May 15th and will run until December. From January to March, the Detroit Polo Club leases a regulation-size arena from the Ringside Equestrian Center. Detroit Polo Club is also host to the University of Michigan Intercollegiate team, which practices at the arena during the academic year.
