1935 – 2018

Margaret “Maggy” Scherer passed away on January 10, 2018. Born in Los Angeles, California, in 1935, Maggy was an accomplished horsewoman from the earliest age. Training under legendary horse trainer Jimmy Williams, she won the National Reigning Championship and Van Sinderen trophy on her great palomino mare The Duchess in 1951 and was the American Horse Show’s Junior National Champion when she was only 16 years old.

She graduated from Stanford University in 1955 where she met her husband, Allan Scherer, who became one of the highest-rated amateur polo players in the U.S. Married in 1955, Maggy and Allan travelled around the world in the 1960’s and 1970’s during the “glory days” of high-goal international polo. Allan’s great polo accomplishments including winning the U.S. Open Polo Championship® were in no small part due to Maggy’s limitless energy, superb horsemanship training abilities, and attention to the smallest detail. Maggy’s lifelong love for horses also extended into the racing world where she owned a number of high-quality Thoroughbreds.

Professionally, for over 10 years, Maggy was a leading runway model in New York and Los Angeles for a number of leading fashion designers including James Galanos, widely considered to be one the world’s foremost 20th century couturiers.

Moving to Palm Beach in the mid-1970’s, Maggy together with Allan, was one of the early team members who created and developed Palm Beach Polo & Country Club, and was most responsible for Palm Beach Polo’s very successful luxury brand polo corporate sponsorship program which grew U.S. high-goal polo to its apex in the 1980’s. Maggy went on to create and manage Palm Beach Design, a leading interior design and special events firm that was responsible for a considerable number of Wellington’s earliest luxury residential and equestrian real estate developments.

A fashion, design and social icon in Palm Beach for well over 30 years, Maggy leaves behind many friends, Allan Scherer her husband of 63 years, her sons Brad and Warren Scherer, and three grandchildren CB, August and Nina Scherer.
