After three decades in the New York Tri-State area, the oldest alumni polo match in the nation is moving to the Myopia Polo Club, located in South Hamilton, MA. The 35th Annual Harriman Cup between alumni from Yale University and the University of Virginia (UVA) will take place on Sunday, September 29. The event sponsors include U.S. Polo Assn., Visit Barbados, Port Ferdinand Resort and JetBlue.
After the game, the Harriman Cup Board will honor Franz Colloredo-Mansfeld, the Club President of the Myopia Polo Club, with the 2019 Harriman Cup Award. Colloredo-Mansfeld is a longtime equestrian and polo player who has supported the polo programs at UVA, Yale University and Harvard University. He is also the President and Chief Executive Officer of Cabot Properties, which he co-founded in 2001.
Players will be wearing U.S. Polo Assn. custom-designed performance jerseys. The UVA team will include Colloredo-Manfeld’s son, Simon, along with CB Scherer and Nick Barry. Colloredo-Manfeld’s other son, Seppi, will play for Yale University along with Chelsea Messinger, Leila Chang, Samuel Clemens and Patrick Marinelli.
The day-long event includes the polo match, tailgating and a dance party. The VIP tent will feature island delicacies and cocktails prepared by a visiting Barbadian chef and mixologist. Tickets for the polo match and VIP tent can be purchased on Eventbrite. Prizes will be awarded for the Best Hat, Best Dressed and Best Tailgate.
U.S. Polo Assn. will also be hosting a VIP event for players, alumni, fans and consumers on Wednesday, September 18, from 8:00pm to 10:00pm ET at their flagship store in Boston’s famous Faneuil Hall. Attendees can enjoy light snacks and entertainment. They can also purchase tickets and sport-inspired products.
The Harriman Cup was founded in 1984 to commemorate the life of W. Averell Harriman, a 1913 Yale graduate and polo player, who was the former Governor of New York, former U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain and the Soviet Union and U.S. Secretary of Commerce under President Truman. Funds raised from the polo match will benefit the undergraduate polo teams at Yale University and the University of Virginia.
