TOURNAMENT HISTORY

The Women's East Coast Open presented by DeLorean AI (formerly the East Coast Open Women's Polo Championship) is a prominent 14- to 18-goal tournament. First introduced in 2018 at Westchester Polo Club in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Women's International Polo Network (Cindy Halle, Dawn Jones, Alyson Poor, Anna Palacios) defeated Avalon Farm (Amanda Poor, Terri Campbell, Tiamo Hudspeth, Paige McCabe, Athena Malin) 9-5 for the inaugural title. Originally established as a USPA-sanctioned event and hosted across multiple USPA Member Clubs, the Women's East Coast Open has been elevated to national status for 2024.

In 2023, Leviate Air Group (Alana Benz, Anna Palacios, Ali King, KC Krueger) earned the victory against Battlefield Park Polo (Maddie Grant, Meghan Milligan, Katelyn Pelaia, Jessica Schmitt) 6-5 at Roseland Polo Club in Crozet, Virginia.

Proudly making its national debut at New Bridge Polo & Country Club in Aiken, South Carolina, five talented teams will battle for this year's Women's East Coast Open presented by DeLorean AI including G3/Garrison Forest, Icon Global/Midstate Roofing, LBL, Memphis Polo and Mint Eco Car Wash. Representing Team USPA is Active USPA Member Sophie Grant (LBL) and alumna Kylie Sheehan (Mint Eco Car Wash).

New Bridge Polo & Country Club will be taking advantage of the USPA's Tournament Support Program (TSP) for the Women's East Coast Open, which provides eligible USPA Member Clubs with waived tournament fees, trophies or trophy reimbursements, one professional umpire and $2,500 in prize money at no extra cost.

The USPA originally created the Tournament Stimulus Package (TSP) to help member clubs host USPA events when the United States was emerging from the first wave of the COVID-19 crisis. The USPA wanted to continue to support member clubs with TSP benefits in 2022. Therefore, it extended and expanded TSP under a new name—the Tournament Support Program. Each USPA Member Club can obtain TSP benefits for two USPA events, with the option of a third under specific circumstances.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT

All teams will play two preliminary matches each. Following the conclusion of preliminary play, teams will be ranked 1-5 with the top three teams automatically advancing to the semifinals. The fourth and fifth ranked teams will play a single elimination playoff game to determine the last semifinalist. The top two ranked teams will play in separate semifinals and will face a team they have not played if possible, otherwise semifinal pairings will be determined by draw. Winners of the semifinals will advance to the Women's East Coast Open final.

In the event of weather delays, the playoff game will be forgone and teams ranked 1-4 will automatically advance to the semifinals.

THE VENUE

Driving into the New Bridge Polo & Country Club in Aiken, South Carolina, one may think they had just entered an argentine estancia. With its signature four-board black fencing and orange clay dirt roads—it is no accident that New Bridge alludes to the current mecca of polo. Founded by amateur polo player Russ McCall in 2000, the club was created in partnership with Argentine professional Matias Magrini.

The astounding 861-acre New Bridge development boasts five world-class polo fields in a private gated community. While that may sound intimidating, McCall points out that the gates serve less as a barrier to keep people out, but rather as a means to keep the occasional escaped horse in. The atmosphere of the club remains true to its humble beginnings, unpretentious, in a natural wooded setting, framed by southern pines and surrounded by an effortless tranquility.

The centerpiece of the club is the rustic colonial-style clubhouse. Constructed of old wood that was shipped from Argentina and assembled onsite, it brings the history and ambiance of the Argentine way of life to South Carolina. The clubhouse also conveniently houses a player’s bar, restaurant and outdoor asado area for post-game parties. Spectators are invited to sit on the porch with a spectacular view of Field 1 to watch the featured Sunday matches. New Bridge offers country living without the inconveniences of country distances. Cottage-style bungalows are situated on residential lots lining Field 1, as well as larger estate houses with the option to buy or build.
