USPA AMERICA CUP®
TOURNAMENT HISTORY
The USPA America Cup®, formerly known as the 16-Goal Championship, was first played in 1974 and is currently held at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club in Carpenteria, California. Boca Raton holds the record for most tournament victories, claiming the cup in seven of the first eight years of competition, with John T. Oxley a member of each team.
The 2020 USPA America Cup® Final featured three Escobars on Santa Clara (Santiago Toccalino, Lucas Escobar, Federico Escobar, Luis Escobar), as they met Klentner Ranch (Justin Klentner, Marcos Alberdi, Geronimo Obregon, Jesse Bray) to determine the champion. A relentless offense from Santa Clara shot at goal 23 times while also attempting seven penalties, leading to a second half upset and 10-7 victory to claim the tournament title.
Played in 2021 as a subsidiary to the Silver Cup®, the USPA America Cup® features Santa Clara squaring off against BenSoleimani.com. Amongst the competition are Active Team USPA members and brothers Lucas Escobar and Nico Escobar (Santa Clara), as well as Team USPA Alumni Tomas Alberdi (BenSoleimani.com). Ben Soleimani seeks to add his name to the USPA America Cup® for a third time after victories in 2013 and 2018, while Luis Escobar tries to capture his fifth title, his first coming in 1989 with Aloha.
